What is Muay Thai?

Muay Thai, or Thai boxing, is a highly effective, full-contact combat sport that is characterised by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees and shins. Dubbed the ‘art of eight limbs’, it uses stand-up striking techniques alongside various clinching techniques.

In a Muay Thai fight, you may identify punching techniques (chok), elbow techniques (sok), Muay Thai kicks (teh), knee techniques (ti khao), foot thrusts (teep) and clinch and neck wrestling (chap kho). Fighters are taught to defend themselves against attacks using blocks, redirection, avoidance, evasion, disruption and anticipation tactics.

When witnessing a Thai boxing battle, you can expect a tremendous spectacle of flow, efficiency, raw simplicity and ruthless power.

The History of Muay Thai

Muay Thai originated in the middle of the eighteenth century, when the famous Thai fighter Nai Khanom Tom received the opportunity to fight his way out of the imprisonment of his Burmese capturers. He won the match in hand-to-hand combat and returned to his people in Siam, who received him as a hero.

Nai Khanom Tom’s fighting style was named Siamese-style boxing, later to be known as Muay Thai. It lives on as an ever-growing combat sport right to this day.
